Car Free Day in Takamatsu
2013年09月24日
This has become and annual event in our city held on the second weekend in September. From 10:30 a.m. ~ 16:00 the cars and other motorized transport are diverted to allow bicycles and pedestrians the freedom to use some of the central inner city’s streets freely. Amen to that.

This is great and we can see a lot of support from the Kagawa prefectural government which is behind the initiatives to increase bicycle lanes and help reduce motorized traffic. I’m all for it.

Car Free Day is in conjunction with European Mobility Week and Car Free Day
http://www.cfdjapan.org
the Japanese government has helped local governments get this started. Our event has a variety of computer generated displays which allow kids, or anyone else, to experience what it’s like to ride around other cities in the world and the health benefits of cycling along with the risks. Road safety people are the instructors and there were all kinds of high-tech simulators which I wanted to get on and try but didn’t. Nothing could be worse than pushing in front of the line of kids for a turn. Then how humiliating if a friend saw this.

The Kotoden train service which operate lines through the city and suburbs are behind the idea and offer a special service where cyclists can carry their machines on their trains. Providing our bikes are in a bag, we can do this on any train service in the country I think. But it’s a step in the right direction to carry one on a train bag-less, even if only for the day.

As with every Car Free Day in Takamatsu there are supporting events including food stalls, bands playing, rickshaw rides, first-aid demonstrations etc.

Please bookmark this event if you’re coming to Takamatsu as it will be held again next year. We do hope you’ll visit us if you’re in Japan! There are plenty of good hotels & reasonably priced. Takamatsu is a very friendly city and it’s so easy to get around. So until next time ..

Triathlon in Takamatsu
2013年09月18日

Triathlon: definition; swim, run, ride a bike. This is another wonderful event in our city and of course is open for any foreign athletes to join. And they do, I counted around 7 this year. Perhaps there were more.

Events like these show us that Takamatsu is quickly becoming a modern city with world-class facilities for athletes and well capable of hosting major events.

Surprisingly there were quite a few men & women well in to middle age competing. Some were past even those criterion. It’s refreshing and encouraging.

Despite the approaching typhoon ‘Man-Yi’ the triathlon athletes toughed out the conditions and made the even another success.

I’ll be back in a week or so with more news from Takamatsu. So until then, enjoy the respite from the summer’s heat and the coming autumn with it’s cool breezes.
